Alright, so a few days ago I sent a status update (tweet) to twitter and facebook informing my friends and followers that I was hosting a petty contest. The contest itself is simple, you guess a number between 1 and 1000 and if you nail the number dead on, I will give you a $50.00 iTunes Gift Card. However, if no one guesses it directly, whomever is the closest will receive a $30.00 iTunes Gift Card. The idea is super simple, guess a number, get a card (if you’re a winner).

If you missed the opportunity, the contest is still running until April 10, 2009 at midnight, so be sure to jump on Twitter and send me your guess with @justinshattuck as the user you are replying to. Otherwise, you really can’t guess. I am not going to be accepting entries through comments on the website, so don’t try.

However, if you have already guessed I have a little list of everyone and their guesses below. Make sure you are listed if you guessed, if not please re-enter by sending me a reply on twitter! I apologize if I missed everyone, I started getting texts, tweets, status updates on twitter and all sorts of other mediums.

If you are not using twitter, signup and once you do, follow @justinshattuck!

As individuals devote their lives and time developing applications and scripts to spam comments on Wordpress blogs, we have found a method for fighting back. Suprisingly, Wordpress does not incorporate a useful method for banning comment entries by IP, username or email address. However, good behind-the-scenes buddy Shane has developed a plugin to perform these actions easily.

Introducing, Bannage, a plugin for Wordpress that allows the administrator of a wordpress powered site to ban comments via usernames, email address, ip address or URI. If you have fallen victim to spam comment entries and such plugins as Akismet are not getting 100% of it. You can attempt to prevent spam using Bannage!

Features

Ban comments by:

URI

Username

Email Address

IP Address

Allows multiple entries for each ban type.

Disclaimer

This plugin is distributed without any warranty, expressed or suggested, yaddi yaddi. The plugin author, Shane, is an avid reader of this website and a good friend of mine but he is too lazy to operate his own wordpress blog. Therefore, I get to take credit and traffic for his new creation!

Installation

Installation is extremely simple, as with all wordpress plugins. Follow these instructions, if you still have issues, post a comment below.

download the plugin.

Extract the compressed bannnage.zip file to your local computer.

Upload bannage.php to your wp-content/plugins/ directory of your website.

Activate Bannage plugin via plugins panel of the administrative interface of wordpress

Changelog

Wildcards (*) have been integrated!

Thanks to Dave Jansen of davejansen.com, wildcards for ip addresses and email addresses have been fully integrated. We are currently testing the new wildcard implementation, if you experience any issues please comment on this thread!

Although the features are pretty standard and basic, more will be added upon suggestions and trials.

BLOW YOUR SITE VISITORS AWAY WITH YOUR PROFESSIONAL WEB CONTENT

When you start receiving hundreds of hits from search engines such as Google and Yahoo!, your primary concern should be in converting every single one of those fresh web viewers into huge fans of your website immediately. You have to make sure that the keyword that got them to your site has a great deal of relevance to your web pages in an overwhelming way so your new website visitors will bookmark your site and keep coming back to your site week after week.

The opinions and suggestions reflected in this article are those of myself, and maybe a few friends I jacked statements from — with their permission of course. However, realize that every website and market is different and these may not work every time. But, it is a damn good starting point and guideline to get you going in the right direction!

You also need a professional, sleek design on your home page so that all the new traffic to your website will not click away from your home page in disgust after seeing ten or twenty spelling errors or poorly loaded and designed graphics. If your web pages do provide a great benefit to your fresh web visitors, they will certainly keep coming back for more and will eventually start purchasing your service or product very soon.

If they find your site does not have anything new to say about the topic that got them there in the first place, no amount of banner advertising or Pay-Per-Click program in the world will keep them there, so don’t waste your time or money by looking for one. Google needs you to describe your website in the most accurate search terms possible, or you will not ever get a good page ranking from Google, much less the amount of web surfers excited enough about your site that they will bookmark it and tell others about it.

WEB PAGE OPTIMIZATION WILL BRING IN TONS OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

An internet research survey conducted last year stated that up to 60% of all website pages on the world wide web are not optimized for the highest possible search engine rankings. You should use this fact to your advantage by making sure that all of your site’s pages are being optimized by you or a SEO professional so you can get a higher Google page ranking than the many millions of sites that are not optimized at all.

The more content you have on your web pages, the better chances are that web page optimization will send the future traffic to your website through the roof. The reason for this is because search engines love to send their web users to the most content-heavy sites that have been submitted to them. Google appreciates a site that has at least five different website categories in their site navigation bar, for instance. The more relevant keywords that Google’s search engine spiders find on your web pages and in your site’s navigation bar, the better.

BY HELPING GOOGLE, YOU ARE HELPING YOURSELF

The reason that Google and Yahoo! like featuring content-heavy websites is because the web surfers that actually go to their search engine screens to look for relevant content will keep coming back if they like the sites that Google and Yahoo! send them to. So, in a way you are actually helping Google as well as your own self-interest when you supply Google with the most relevant keyword descriptions possible.

Google makes millions of dollars every month by featuring Google ads on their main site pages that want to advertise directly to the web surfers who use relevant keyword searches, so make sure your keyword definitions for your site are as relevant as possible. Otherwise, Google will never give you the high page ranking that your site deserves, which will cause future website traffic to your site to dry up as quickly as a prune left out in the sun too long.

YOUR WEB PAGES MUST BE PERCEIVED AS A PERFECT WAY FOR YOUR WEB VIEWERS TO GET UP-TO-DATE INFO

You have to be sure all of your web page content is current and up to date on your site’s main subject topics or future web visitors will think you have put no effort at all into your website, so why shoud they bother bookmarking your out of date site?

Just because you happen to know everything about your website’s subject matter and topics does not mean that your site visitors know anything about them, so treat them as people that need to be educated on your website’s topics at all times so your future website traffic to your site will be huge indeed.

Optimize all of your content-heavy web pages by updating your keyword density and making sure that all of your site’s blog titles and article subject headings are in bold. Along with applying that SEO technique, you need to be sure that your website pages contain all of your most popular and relevant keyword phrases as much as possible. This way, your success as an online entrepeneur will become a reality.

THE LAST YEAR HAS ROCKED, BUT I MISS A FEW PEOPLE AND THINGS

I cannot even begin to explain the extraordinary adventures I have been on over the previous year. There was the crazy Summer Ride Share road-trip project and living my life on tape; visiting Lake Tahoe for a wedding, losing power, and finding comfort gambling with Nick; road-tripping with Justin Clark and Blake up to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for Chap’s Wedding; and everything in between!

I apologize in advance for mis-links, anything I’ve left out, and the ever-present errors in my spelling. This is a fun article and therefore, I’m just going to throw her together and not give IT to much thought. Got an issue with it — bring it up and I’ll stab you in the throat with a pixie stick! brahaha!

The now ex-girl Kimberly and I split, talked to a few new ones, they all sucked (sorry girls you did), and randomly went on a few road-trips up to Ohio to hang out with my cousin and her family. All in all the activities have not let up, but I did leave the old industry and enter a new one.

New office, new environment, miss the old crew, and hate the bugs. Makes sense to me, probably not you. But needless to say my new office is in the basement of Zink hall and well, it sucks down here. I feel sick all the time cause there is no airflow and its stuffy. Apparently it is not just my feeling — it is shared throughout the majority of people down here.

THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE DAY FOR ANYTHING

My days have been easily occupied by office duties, freelance work, and new start-up projects. I was attempting to assist another friend with some start-up issues he was having; but I think that quickly turned into Justin getting told tall-tales and fictional stories to get him stoked about something he should have quickly knew was too good to be true.

It is 7:41PM and I am actually writing at my office, where I am continuing to work and try to get a few other things done with my quiet time here. I really wish we could add a few hours to the clock each evening, actually each morning, and we could all sleep in a bit. However we can’t, so I’ll deal with it too.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED AND DECIDED NOT TO LEARN

I’ve learned that people are always out to get something out of you regardless of how much passion, care, comfort, or integrity you give them. I also learned that I am not the greatest of friends. I try to be, but man I really disappoint sometimes. I know there is one specific person who might be reading this, who shares my name, yeah.. Apologies again.

I’ve learned that friends are great too. No matter how bad you screw up, they’re there to help ya keep it together. And real friends aren’t spiteful. I could probably pee on Nick’s bed and after he beat the poop out of my arm and forced me to clean it up, we’d likely still be cool. HaH!

I’ve regretfully not learned any real sense of organization. Still working on it. Suggestions, I’m up for them!

WHAT IS NEXT FOR JUSTIN?

First, this blog is going to be a little bit more free-spirited. I’ve been allowing Wordpress and my plugins, themes, and various other pieces of shit work take form and function over my rants. I really just want to talk and get feedback on this thing now-a-days. Besides, Just the Web, LLC., and ThisTulsa.com are really taking up most of my free-time.

If you’re a woman who is goofy as a mofo and enjoys everything I do, and hates the smell of ham, doesn’t complain, oh and likes EVERYTHING at SUBWAY on your sandwich but carrots and lettuce..

Let’s date..

WORDS OF ADVICE

Don’t blame the entire world.. just the world around you. Oh and Brisbane Australia = where I want to live now. So.. anything else.. stabbed in the throat. How was that for randomness!

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION IS IMPERATIVE FOR A WEB BUSINESS TO SUCCEED

If an online business these days really wants to increase their overall profit margin, then they usually HAVE to have at least a top twenty page ranking in Google to get a few hundred new customers coming to their site every week. The best way to get to that goal is to optimize their web pages for the search engines to see that they have the best relevant content devoted to their specific market or industry.

This article will not discuss “black hat” SEO techniques or any search engine optimization dirty tricks. I will only be discussing truly professional methods that legitimate SEO companies use every day to get their clients that huge push to the top ten or twenty rankings in Google specifically.

It also spawns from a relatively recent incident I have been experiencing with our wonderful search engine friend’s pet “GoogleBot.”

GOOGLE SHOULD BE REALISTIC WHEN IT COMES TO THE WAY THE WEB WORKS TODAY

It is a fact today that the way the internet runs when it comes to ranking web pages does not sit well with Google. They don’t appreciate the fact that because a site has forty great links to other larger sites, it will have a much better internet rank than one that only has four or five good links in its site. Google also does not like the modifications to sites that increase web page keyword optimization such as changing your title page to reflect a much better keyword target than the one you had previously on your main site page.

Because of the fact that the web was in this state before Google arrived on the scene, Google should just acknowledge that they will never be able to change entirely the way search engines will have to work in the future so they can embrace the present as far as dealing with the real pros who have taken SEO techniques to the level that they are at today.

HOW DO PEOPLE WEB SURF TODAY?

With so many different web sites available to a person searching for “horror movie posters”, for example, that web surfer looking for high quality posters in his price range will go to probably the fourth page on Google’s “horror movie poster” keyword search index. There is absolutely no way that Google can supply every relevant result for that specific keyword phrase.

The problem is that a poster company called “The Movie Poster Hut” in Kansas City might have the best deal on giving this web surfer exactly what he wants at a great low price, but because of the incompetence or lack of knowledge by the web designer of the “Movie Poster Hut” to put in relevant keywords in the main title page of that poster site, it ranks 1200th in Google’s “horror movie poster” pages, and this web surfer will never see it.

But if a professional SEO company got involved in optimizing all of the movie poster company’s web pages, that web surfer would be a very happy man who just got a better deal on his movie poster than he ever thought possible. Why on Earth would Google have a problem with that?

WHAT EXACTLY IS GOOGLE’S PROBLEM WHEN IT COMES TO SEO TECHNIQUES?

What Google would love to see is a world wide web that is only indexed by their search engine which will no longer see higher page rankings due to link exchanges and keyword optimization techniques. In Google’s strict submission guidelines, they actually embrace some non-SEO tasks as being ethical, but never include normal SEO techniques like SEO-copywriting as being anything you should include in your web pages upon submitting your pages to Google.

This attitude of hostility against SEO companies and techniques that Google currently has needs to change. The sole job that Google is to generate to their web visitors the most relevant online businesses and blog sites that come up on their pages when a specific keyword is typed into their search bar. The legitimate SEO companies are doing their best to get their qualified business clients in the top twenty rankings using ethical SEO techniques.

Google should be intertwined with SEO professionals and SEO companies instead of being at odds with them. That is the only way that the internet will be able to grow and flourish in the coming years.

Over the past year I have slowly dwindled the amount of time I have available to blog personally to almost nothing. Seems a bit twisted considering I write a lot for ThisTulsa.com, but honestly it is a bit of a higher priority for me right now. I’ve decided I’m going to start blogging over here on my lovely blog again — but I am making a few changes here and there and going to try to figure out a fun Version 4-2 or something.

Not quite a redesign but not quite the same. If you have any ideas — please let me know!
