As a blog owner, I take a great deal of interest in monetization, especially advertising mediums such as: text ads, reviews and banners. However, I have just begun to receive a great deal of interest amongst other web property owners in advertising on my website, privately. During this time, I have paid close attention, more than usual, to the requests of these potential advertisers and always ask the question, “Why me?”
Usually, I get an educated and wonderfully worded response back to my question, these inquiries I take seriously. However, lately I have received an increasing number of fake advertisers inquiries. Now, I emphasize fake, because I don’t honestly know if these potential advertisers are pulling my leg or just magically and coincidentally disappearing from the face of the earth.
In the past week I have received three similar email messages. Each correspondence relates to my website because, each author says, “I have a great deal of interest in your website.” Well that is great, interest in my website, thanks! But why? They continue on to explain to me that they would like to pay for private text-link-ads on specific pages of website, however for this small amount of money I must agree that the links stay permanently.
Why would anyone in their right freaking mind agree to permanent text-link-ads, without seeing the product, service or link prior to agreeing? Not only this, but who the hell would want a link to be permanent in the first place. Each of these individuals offered me sub $1000.00 for anywhere from 4 to 9 statements, each statement containing an average of 3 links!
I was a little in shock at first, now completely outraged because all three jumped ship when I asked to see the link statements prior to approval. Honestly, I was entertaining the idea, however, knowing I would never follow through with their agenda, not for that little of money.
Consider this post a mere vent, a disposal of my thoughts towards the topic of these so-called text-link-ads. However, I believe they’re a scam.. anyone else have any experience with them?

1Yes I’ve had the same problem! I’ve found it helps to have an advertising page that displays all your traffic stats, page rank info, prices and demographics. This helps cut down on the random inquiries, but I still tend to get some curious inquiries from people who don’t fully investigate my site and are just interested in doing the math of how much money I’m making and no real interest in advertising.

2Interesting events, Justin.
I was wondering what they’re up to. They’re offering to pay you, so it’s not like they’re trying to scam you.
Keep us informed of updates ok?

4Advertising is a constantly evolving landscape.
Online ads will keep on evolving in ways we can’t predict so if anyone asks you for anything “permanent”, it should be a serious cause for concern.
You did the right thing ; )
